1930年代，Jack Parsons只是洛杉矶一个聪明、雄心勃勃的蓝领工人，为一所化学工厂看门，而后来他成了著名的民间科学家。他在少年时就沉迷于航天，想制造火箭来登上月亮。也从小被“世界上最邪恶的男人”、争议极大的神秘学家阿莱斯特·克劳利所吸引，迷上了泰勒玛教，会在晚上举办和参加疯狂的性仪式。他是著名的“火箭自杀小组”创始人之一，中国科学界泰斗钱学森就曾参加这个小组。而Parsons追求黑魔法的行为也同样著名，并与科学教的创始人L. Ron Hubbard交往非常密切。1952年，他在一次至今原因还没有为大众信服的说法的实验室爆炸中去世。
